Fortaleza – Portuguese for ‘fortress’ – is the capital of the State of Ceará – the Land of Light – within the northeastern tip of Brazil. With 2.4 million inhabitants, the city ranks fourth in Brazil for populous. The thriving port and industrial hub is also extremely popular with tourists, attracted by a myriad of qualities from rich, friendly Brazilian culture to delicious food and a bustling nightlife.
Visitors to Fortaleza need never check a weather forecast or pack a spare jumper as with 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, air and sea temperatures constantly in the 80s and a soothing ocean breeze, the weather is always set to summer.
Fortaleza has 25km of urban beaches, many of which serve as a Mecca for windsurfers and kite surfers. The sandy scenery is complemented by small rafts used by Ceará’s fishermen, whose daily haul lands on the plates of the regions fine restaurants.
Praia do Futuro – Beach of the Future – is one of Fortaleza’s most popular and by day it throngs with bathers flitting between the beachside restaurants fashioned out of straw for refreshment and by night, Thursday in particular, revelers dance to live music and dine on sumptuous crab. All across Fortaleza there are plenty of bars, restaurants and live entertainment to keep visitors occupied – on average Fortaleza alone receives half a million tourists annually.
Fortaleza is accessed by Pinto Martins International Airport served by TAP Air Portugal, British Airways to name but a few. The modern passenger terminal opened in 1998 and accommodates 14 aircraft on stand at any one time.
