About Canada

  • Founded as a union of British colonies, gaining its independence from the UK in an incremental process which ended in 1982.
  • Governed as a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy with HM Queen Elizabeth 11 as head of state. The head of government is Prime Minister Steven Harper.
  • Canada is a bilingual and multicultural nation. Both English and French are the official languages of the country. Immigration has helped to make Canada one of the world's richest nations and the country is largely free of racial tension.
  • Approximately 93.7% of the working age population is employed with 2006 witnessing an increase in employment of 1.7%.
  • A technologically advanced and industrialized nation, Canada is a net exporter of energy because of its large fossil fuel deposits. Nuclear energy and hydroelectric power are just 2 of the key industries driving a diversified economy which relies heavily on an abundance of natural resources and trade - particularly with the United States.
